Abstract
The definition of fungal endophytes in plants is presented in the article. The chronology of endophyte research, methods of isolation and determination, colonisation of hosts, distribution of endophytes within the plants kingdom, taxonomy and ecology of fungal endophytes and explanation of the symbiotic relation between an endophyte and a host are described. Endophyt`s role in mutualistic symbiosis is assigned. Predictions of endophyte research in bioligy, agriculture and forestry are presented. Some preliminary results of our research of endophytes in Austrian pine (Pinus nigra Arn.).
